School's out for Summer!

We've been behind in our blogging lately and wanted to be sure to make a post about our last day of Character Education at the local elementary school near our house. We've been volunteering through Rotary this year, and each month we visit 4 of the third grade classes to teach them character education. We've talked about patience, citizenship, honesty, self respect, and much more.
We had a great time getting to know our teachers and the kids, and so we planned to do something special for them at year end. We got them customized wristbands, similar to the Lance Armstrong Live Strong bands. Ours said Character Counts! We were so distracted with trying to surprise the kids, that I guess we sort of missed the subtle hints that they were planning a surprise for us as well.
When we arrived late in May for our last visit, we opened the door to their hall and all four classes were gathered down the hall on either side, doing a cheer for us. Then two little girls stepped forward and gave us a card they made for us and a gift certificate to The Outback. The previous month they kept asking us what our favorite restaurant was (for a "survey" for math). I guess we were slow to catch on.

The kids loved our wristbands and we had fun signing their yearbooks as we visited each class. We're glad we took the time to participate in this program, and we're already signed up to stay with the 3rd Grade next year!
